Long-Term Use of Acid Reflux Drugs Linked to Increased Dementia Risk

Taking prescription acid reflux medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for more than 4 years may increase dementia risk, a recent study has found. This type of drug is commonly used as a first-line treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The study involved data from over 5,700 participants who were all dementia-free at baseline. Usage of PPIs was tracked for each participant, particularly how long the drugs were taken for. During an average follow-up period of 5.5 years, dementia diagnoses were also recorded.

Researchers found that participants who took PPIs for over 4.4 years had an overall 33% higher chance of developing dementia. Taking PPIs for less than this amount of time was not associated with a jump in dementia risk.

The study did have its limitations, including that it was observational only and could not take into account all possible drug interactions that may have affected the results. However, chronic use of PPIs is fairly common, in spite of the fact that they are recommended for short-term use (4-8 weeks). Hopefully, further research will clarify possible risks.

6,000 Steps a Day May Cut Mortality Risk by 42%

Walking about 3,867 steps a day is enough to reduce the risk of dying from any cause, some new research has discovered. In addition, taking just 2,337 steps a day can reduce the risk of dying from diseases related to the heart and blood vessels.

This information comes from “the world’s largest study” on walking, mortality risk, and heart disease, involving 226,889 people from 17 different studies. It demonstrates that benefits for the heart and longevity can be achieved with fewer than 10,000 steps, which has often been highlighted as the “ideal” amount.

The latest research does confirm, however, that more steps generally equal greater benefits. For example, 6,000-10,000 steps a day was linked to a 42% reduced mortality risk in older adults, and 7,000-13,000 steps a day was linked to a 49% lower mortality risk for younger adults.

“Our study confirms that the more you walk, the better,” said Professor Maciej Banach, a researcher involved in the study. “In addition, our analysis indicates that as little as 4,000 steps a day are needed to significantly reduce deaths from any cause, and even fewer to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease.”

The Real Reason You Lose Muscle Mass as You Age

The average person has lost about 30% of their muscle mass by the time they hit age 60— but have you ever wondered why this happens?

As you might imagine, it has a lot to do with protein, which is a critical macronutrient for muscle health. However, muscle mass loss is NOT simply due to a lack of protein in the diet but rather to the fact that your body uses it less efficiently. You can find out exactly why this happens and how to start making protein work for (rather than against) your body in The Real Reason You're Losing Muscle Mass as You Age, and How to Stop It and Even Reverse It. This free information is written by the highly respected formulator, Dr. Frank Shallenberger, who is board certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. You’ll discover the 3 specific reasons people lose so much lean body mass as they age as well as how Dr. Shallenberger recommends solving this problem and easily boosting both muscle and bone mass.

14 Healthiest Fruit & Veggie Peels You Should NOT Throw Away

Not only are many fruit and vegetable peels edible, they also frequently contain more nutrients and antioxidants than the fruit/veggie itself, plus a healthy “dose” of fiber. For that reason, consider eating apples, potatoes (and sweet potatoes), cucumbers, peaches, and eggplant with the skin on. (But go organic to avoid pesticides!) Citrus peels can be grated for zest and fuzzy kiwi sliced thinly and eaten with the peel on. Watermelon rinds and banana peels are also healthy–  see these top tips for eating them → (More)

You Can’t Really “Catch Up” on Sleep Over the Weekend

Only about 65% of U.S. adults get the recommended minimum of 7 hours of sleep per night. There’s a lot of evidence linking sleep deprivation to an increased risk of heart disease, which makes getting enough sleep even more important. And in case you were thinking you can even things out by sleeping late on the weekends, a new study shows that “catch up” sleep is not enough to negate the heart-hurting effects of sleep missed during the week. Sun-Intensive Vacations Could Harm Your Skin Microbiome

Your skin is home to a large, diverse microbiome— not unlike your gut. Many things can affect this microbiome, but UV rays from the sun are thought to be one of the most disruptive forces. Some new research appears to confirm this by showing that “sun-seeking” holidays can harm skin bacteria. The good news is that the microbial community appeared to recover about 28 days post-vacation, but even short-term microbiome changes may impact skin health in ways yet to be determined. (More)

Health Risks of Microplastics + Tips to Protect Yourself

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5 mm in size that come from sources like small microbeads and the breakdown of larger plastics. They are currently a huge environmental pollutant in oceans, lakes, soil, and food sources. The health effects of microplastics in humans aren’t yet “confirmed,” but some studies show they may have toxic effects on the digestive tract, lungs, and hormones. You can reduce your exposure by using non-plastic containers and bottles and by avoiding products with microbeads. (More)
