A Daily Probiotic Could Slow Age-Related Brain Decline

Taking a daily probiotic could improve cognitive function and slow cognitive decline in middle-aged or older adults, a recent study has found. It appears to do so in part by reducing the amount of a bacteria known as Prevotella that is suspected to play a role in age-related cognitive impairment.

The study involved 169 adults with an age range of 52-75 years. Participants were divided into groups that took either a probiotic or a placebo for 3 months and were also subdivided based on whether cognition was normal or impaired. The probiotic specifically contained the strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.

After the supplementation period, Prevotella as well as another “bad” bacteria, Dehalobacterium, were reduced in the probiotic group that had mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Participants in this group also scored better on cognitive testing than they had before.

While these results are promising, it remains to be seen whether probiotics besides Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG can benefit cognitive function in a similar way. That being said, some other recent research has already shown that probiotic-rich fermented foods could benefit overall brain health as well.

Toxic Heavy Metal Linked to Endometriosis

Cadmium, a toxic metal, may contribute to the development of endometriosis, according to some new research. Endometriosis is an often painful condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. It’s estimated to affect up to 10% of women aged 15-44.

“The findings are interesting given that cadmium can act like the hormone estrogen, and this hormone is central to the development of endometriosis,” said Mandy Hall, first study author. “By looking at environmental risk factors such as metal cadmium, we are moving the needle closer to understanding risk factors for this condition.”

This study was the largest to date to look at cadmium in urine samples (and its potential effects) across a long exposure period of 10-30 years. The highest levels of cadmium present in urine were linked to a 60% higher risk of endometriosis, while women with medium-high levels had about double the risk.

Cadmium exposure in the U.S. most frequently comes from breathing in cigarette smoke or eating contaminated foods, including leafy greens, root vegetables, and organ meats— kidney, liver, etc.

Brighter Teeth Without the Chemicals

A healthy smile and whiter teeth can be achieved by using natural, non-toxic ingredients.

Most conventional toothpastes utilize harsh chemicals and artificial additives to remove stains and prevent cavities. These ingredients can cause mouth irritation and even more harmful effects in the long run. Wellnesse has changed oral care by developing an effective whitening formula that is 100% natural and free of parabens, carrageenan, and other toxic chemicals. It uses a natural mineral known as hydroxyapatite to remineralize teeth and a trio of botanicals to combat bad breath and brighten your smile.

3 Key Reasons to Eat More Flavonoids + Top Food Sources

Flavonoids are a type of phytochemical (i.e., plant chemical) with powerful antioxidant properties. They have shown cancer-fighting potential, an ability to lower blood pressure and support heart health, and promise for improving brain function. You can find flavonoids in a range of colorful plant foods as well as herbs and spices. Top sources include berries, citrus fruits, black or green tea, spices like cinnamon, and herbs like parsley or thyme. (More)

A Vegetarian Diet Could Increase Hip Fracture Risk

Eating less (or no) meat is linked to several significant health benefits, but there are some potential pitfalls associated with going vegetarian. For example, one recent study revealed that vegetarians are more at risk of hip fractures than meat eaters or pescetarians. However, the authors did note that hip fracture risk was only moderately increased for vegetarians and that adequate nutrient intake— particularly of protein, vitamin D, and vitamin B12— might offset this risk without the need for meat. Heirloom Beans Are High in Antioxidants, Fight Inflammation

Beans are a highly nutritious (and commonly underrated) food. Not only are they high in protein and fiber, beans are also rich in compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Recently, researchers found that two types of heirloom beans (unique pinto and black bean varieties) were particularly high in health-boosting compounds concentrated in the outer seed coat. Maybe it’s time this humble food got to enjoy a larger share of the spotlight. (More)

Physical Activity May Help MS-Related Fatigue, Disability

Multiple sclerosis can cause many symptoms, including pain and impaired coordination, but one of the biggest is often fatigue. According to a recent study, higher levels of daily physical activity may help to reduce this fatigue, especially in those with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Having less fatigue was also associated with a lower disability rate, suggesting another potential benefit of incorporating physical activity into each day. (More)

9 Symptoms of GERD to Know About

If you mainly associate GERD (which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease) with heartburn, you aren’t alone. However, there are other less-recognized symptoms that could indicate the presence of GERD, including nausea, pain or difficulty while swallowing, a bitter or sour taste in the mouth, and chronic cough. Hoarseness, sore throat, and chest pain or tightness can also develop, and regurgitation is another common symptom. (More)
