Blood Pressure Medication May Increase Risk of Stroke

Using angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors to manage blood pressure may increase stroke risk, according to some recent research. Overall, ACE inhibitors were associated with a 19% higher risk of stroke mortality and an 11% higher risk of fatal and nonfatal stroke compared to diuretics.

The study included more than 32,000 participants aged 55 and over with high blood pressure. Each participant was randomly assigned to take a thiazide-type diuretic, calcium channel blocker (CCB), or ACE inhibitor for an initial trial period, and their health data was tracked afterwards for up to 23 years.

Though the risk of cardiovascular mortality was similar for all three groups, the ACE inhibitor group had a significantly higher stroke risk that lasted even past the original clinical trial period. However, a causal link could not be proven, so researchers advise interpreting the results “with caution.”

“When stroke risk is a major consideration, diuretics and calcium channel blockers have been shown to have better blood pressure control and reduce the risk of stroke compared to ACE inhibitors…” said Jose-Miguel Yamal, study author. “Further studies are warranted to confirm these results that include blood pressure medications used in the long-term.”

Plant-Derived Compounds Could Reduce Breast Cancer Recurrence

Two types of plant-derived compounds – soy isoflavones and lignans – may help lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence as well as breast cancer mortality, a new study has found. Soy isoflavones were linked to a 26% reduced chance of breast cancer recurrence, while lignans were linked to a 28% lower risk of death from breast cancer.

Soy isoflavones are natural compounds found in soybean foods, including tofu, soy milk, and cooked soybeans. Lignans are a type of polyphenol found in a wide variety of plants. When they are digested in the gut, a compound with beneficial health effects – enterolactone – is formed.

The study was a review that analyzed data from 22 separate studies on specific plant compounds or foods and breast cancer outcomes. The equivalent of 2-3 servings of soy per day was associated with the greatest benefits for breast cancer survivors. No optimal “dose” for lignans could be determined.

Researchers also found that green tea consumption may lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence by up to 44% in women with stage I or II breast cancer, although the results weren’t conclusive enough “to justify recommendations.” Still, the greatest effects were seen from drinking 3-5 cups or more per day. Migraines vs. Headaches: Key Differences + Natural Relief Options

Migraines and headaches are both painful and frustrating, but there are key differences between the two that will tell you which one you're suffering from. Technically, migraine is a neurologic disorder that involves often one-sided pain and sometimes light or sound sensitivity and nausea. A key prevention strategy is to avoid known triggers, while supplements like magnesium may help overall. As far as headaches go, there are many different types, and most can be helped through relaxation and massage techniques. (More)

Hearing Loss Linked to Increased Dementia Risk

There are many risk factors associated with dementia, and previous research has indicated that hearing loss may be one of them. Now, the largest study on hearing loss and cognitive function to date offers confirmation for this, finding that those with hearing loss who do not wear hearing aids may have a 20% higher risk of dementia than those with normal hearing. On a more positive note, those with hearing loss who do wear hearing aids only have a 6% greater dementia risk. (More)

Chiropractic Care Improves Lower Back Health After Surgery

A recent study has found that chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) may be beneficial for adults with sciatica following low back surgery. Those who received chiropractic care were about 45% less likely to undergo additional lumbar surgery as compared to a control group that received standard medical care. The study was observational only, meaning it could not establish a causal link, but the study authors believe CSM could be a beneficial therapy option for sciatica after surgery. (More)

Dancing Could Be the Best Exercise for Weight Loss

Just about any type of exercise can be beneficial for weight loss when combined with other healthy lifestyle changes, but dancing might be at the top of the list. According to a recent systematic review, getting exercise through dancing was associated with a decrease in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and total fat mass. Plus, dancing is a lot of fun, which makes it easier to stick to your exercise routine, giving it an edge over more conventional forms of physical activity. (More)

10 Top Brain Exercises to Boost Your Memory

You can also try learning something new, practicing your hand-eye coordination, or drawing a map from memory. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

Ears consist of 3 main parts – the outer, middle, and inner ear. They do their job so well that most people would be able to determine the temperature of water just by how it sounds when poured. That’s because colder water molecules are more sluggish, giving them a different tone than hot water.
