Constipation Linked to 73% Increased Risk of Cognitive Decline

Less frequent bowel movements are associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline and poorer cognitive function, a recent study has found. Overall, constipation was linked to the equivalent of 3 increased years of brain aging and a 73% higher risk of cognitive decline.

The study involved data from over 110,000 people, including information on bowel movement frequency and both subjective and objective assessments of cognitive function. Constipation was defined as a bowel movement every three or more days.

Not only was constipation linked to poorer brain function as compared to having a bowel movement every day, the researchers also found that participants who had fewer butyrate-producing bacteria and fewer fiber-digesting bacteria in their gut were at a higher risk for both constipation and poorer cognitive function.

“These results stress the importance of clinicians discussing gut health, especially constipation, with their older patients,” said Dong Wang, senior study author. “Interventions for preventing constipation and improving gut health include adopting healthy diets enriched with high-fiber and high-polyphenol foods…drinking plenty of water every day; and having regular physical activity.”

Dust from Artificial Stone Countertops Can Be Deadly

Exposure to dust from engineered (synthetic) quartz countertops is causing irreversible, potentially deadly lung disease in workers involved in the manufacturing process, a new study has found. It has already led to fatalities as well as the need for lung transplants.

The disease is called silicosis and is known to affect those who cut, grind, or polish natural stone. However, the dust from engineered stone has proven to be far more dangerous and deadly due to a higher silica content and the addition of polymer resins and dyes.

Given the high demand for engineered quartz countertops, cases of silicosis continue to occur at a fairly high rate. Latino immigrant workers are the most affected in the U.S. Countries like Australia have considered banning these countertops or introducing new regulations to prevent silicosis, but no measures have been taken yet.

So far, the risks seem to be low for homeowners who have engineered stone countertops. However, the dangers increase any time dust is created from the countertops— if they are cut in the home or removed during remodel, for example.

Fight Pain, Inflammation from Your Living Room

You can make use of natural light therapy to ease pain, lower inflammation, and boost your health in a number of other ways.

Chronic inflammation is now recognized as a leading contributor to chronic diseases, many of them pain-related. While there are several natural ways— including herbs and spices— to reduce inflammation, none is easier than red light therapy. It utilizes safe, red and near-infrared rays to activate mitochondria, supporting your body at the deepest level. Studies have shown it can fight inflammation, ease muscle and joint pain, and even boost mood and energy. This therapy used to be in-office only, but Lumebox has developed a portable red light therapy device you can use in your home (or anywhere). It’s third-party tested for safety and simple to operate.

8 Vegetables That Are Healthier Cooked

Eating your veggies raw isn’t always the best way to go. Heat activates the nutrients in certain vegetables, making them more available to your body. For example, tomatoes are rich in the antioxidant lycopene, and cooking them boosts lycopene potency by up to 62%. Cooking spinach helps lower its oxalate content, which can impair the absorption of other nutrients, and steaming broccoli activates its cancer-fighting compounds. Mushrooms, asparagus, and carrots are also more nutritious when cooked. (More)

Kundalini Yoga Lowers Stress, May Protect Brain Function

Kundalini yoga is a type of yoga that involves physical movement and poses but focuses especially on breathing, meditation, and chanting. Like other forms of yoga, it has benefits for lowering stress and appears to also protect memory and brain function. More specifically, researchers used MRI technology to determine that practicing kundalini yoga promotes connectivity in the brain region connected to stress and memory decline. (More)

Eating a Vegetarian Diet Could Lower Heart Disease Risk

Eating more plant-based foods is generally a good move for your heart, but researchers wanted to know how this type of diet would affect those at highest risk for heart disease. To do this, they analyzed data from 20 different clinical trials— and discovered very positive results. Overall, a vegetarian diet helped significantly lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and body weight as well as HbA1c levels, even for those with a high risk of heart problems. (More)

Exercise Improves Health During Dialysis, Reduces Hospital Visits

Dialysis is a standard treatment for kidney failure and accomplishes the work of filtering blood, which is what healthy kidneys would normally do. Some new research has found that engaging in regular light exercise while undergoing dialysis can provide a big health boost. Participants who completed light exercises about 3 times a week had better physical well-being than those who didn’t exercise. They also spent less time in the hospital. (More)

Baked Goods Warning: Health Risks of Potassium Bromate

Potassium bromate is a common chemical additive in bread and other baked goods where it helps improve the dough and bread texture. Unfortunately, this additive is also linked to cancer in lab studies and has been classified as a possible human carcinogen. Because of this, potassium bromate is banned in many countries, including the European Union, but not in the U.S. You can avoid it by checking the label(s) for any bread/baked goods you buy from the store. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

Gravity is constantly applying downward pressure to your joints and compressing your spine. As a result, the average person loses about 1 centimeter in height by the end of the day. Sleeping horizontally is critical for spine and joint decompression (and regaining that centimeter).

Younger-Looking Skin and a Better Mood

Did you know there’s one simple, natural therapy that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve your mood?

Known as red light therapy, this technique activates mitochondria to lower inflammation and boost blood flow. The result is less noticeable wrinkles and scars as well as improved skin texture and elasticity. Using a portable red light device daily has also been shown to increase energy, ease symptoms of depression, fight inflammation, and reduce pain. You can find out more about the benefits of Lumebox light therapy here.
